Pad drilling faciltates drilling of multiple wells from the same pad - so reduce need to move drill from well to well. As for a vertical well and a horizontal well down the same drill hole - not that I have heard off.
Problems with sealing comes to mind.
Patchawarra deeps can be 1000+ metres deep so i'd imagine that all you'd need is vertical/near vertical holes in the deeper areas.
