As I mentioned above, one of the side effects of Cvac is flu-like symptoms.
A patient, currently in one of the phase 2 trials, posted this on a forum:
"... About to have second round. Mild flu like symptoms for 24 hours after 1st vac. Otherwise no probs...and others I know report similarly.
Good Luck"
So unless the placebo is an 'active placebo' (configured to produce the same side effects as the tested drug - which I think is unlikely, anyone know different?) It stands to reason that those involved will know pretty quickly which group is which.
Also, even thought the trial is double blind, the results are being monitored stringently. If, as philbar posted, there are significant positive results, the code of ethics requires that those in the control group are given the drug.
