    I recall some footage where water was sprayed on burning magnesium (which has similar properties to aluminium) and it actually accelerated the reaction. The reaction needs to be particularly aggressive to draw the oxygen out of the water though.

    Burning aircraft/aircraft crashes are a different story though... It takes a lot of energy to get the aluminium reaction going so it doesn't normally happen. If it did normally happen you'd hear about it! Aircraft fires are basically hydrocarbon fires so water is basically ok but fire-fighting foam would be preferred.
