agree gold down to finance margain calls on other investments. However, I have seen several reports saying the bulk of the sell down was to cover another rise in margin by cme.
this post covers it a bit.

Either way - it sure will be interesting to see how we (fml) handle this sp wise. On past performance we will probably go north ? :)
