I think this is what Cormac McCarthy wrote about in his book "The Road". I have been thinking a lot about what has really happened to the world in the story, as it is never clearly stated and obtainable. But this would fit perfectly: a economic crisis not yet seen before in its gravity. Up to the point were cannibalism becomes a way of survival, yummi.
