I think with the points I made in my post above it doesn't matter if I am gay or not - what matters is that everyone who is expected to participate in Australian society and meet the obligations that such participation entails are entitled to equal treatment and protection in the eyes of the law.
Australia is a country founded on the principle of the separation of church and state. Marriage is a legal relationship that is defined under the Marriage Act. It also happens to be a term used in churches. Because the name is the same, doesn't make them the same thing.
