that is part true and part furphy - he took a pay cut to his base pay and Qantas unions at a similar time took a pay freeze.
Joyce during this time was paid a significant bonus which took his pay way above what it was originally.
The unions were still on the pay freeze when Joyce got the bonus and were none to happy about it.
Joyce must have earned his bonus so good for him.
