The deals can indeed be extremely convoluted but banking is about borrowing short and lending long and not about equity investing at task that is left to investment funds, and non-banking financial institutions.
When big losses occur banks either go broke, are recapitalized, or forced to contract their loan books.
If the DB is forced to contract its loan books then it is possible although this is arguably that eventually some holders of shares bough on loan may be forced to liquidate their positions.
However this chain of events does not happen from a day to another as it requires time to produce its effects.
