[GREECE'S OPPOSITION LEADER SAMARAS] has called for a snap election, while Pres [SARKOZY] is due to call Chanc [MERKEL] around midday on Athens decision to hold a referendum on its Eur 130bn bailout package, according to the French President's office. However, the [EC] claims Greece has not formally informed Brussels about its referendum plans, that were announced late yest and threaten to undermine the EMU recovery. The EC awaits for Greece to confirm the vote before releasing a statement. Recall, PM Fillon will meet domestic banks tomorrow to discuss the latest proposals agreed by EMU leaders which includes a 50% writedown on Greek debt. Back to [GERMANY], govt spokesman Seibert says Chanc Merkel urged ECB Pres Draghi to work for a stable Euro on his first day in office, whilst the [BDB] says (in an understatement) that the Greek aid vote has led to uncertainty on markets. This as [EZ BOURSES] extend losses to 4%-5.7%.
