Perry urged to ban Minuteman migration

AUSTIN, May 24, 2005 — Eleven state senators have filed a resolution urging Gov. Rick Perry to oppose any plans the Minuteman Project has to patrol the Texas-Mexico border.

The Minuteman Project involves a group of private citizens who patrolled the Arizona-Mexico border night and day in April, saying the federal government was not living up to its responsibility to curb illegal immigration.

The Minutemen have announced plans to patrol parts of the Texas-Mexico border in October, prompting the resolution.

“I have faith in our law enforcement agencies to do their job,” said state Sen. Juan Hinojosa, D-McAllen, one author of the resolution. “The last thing they need is interference from untrained individuals who could ultimately pose serious danger to citizens and immigrants along the border region.”

Representatives of the project could not be reached for comment Monday night.

Senate Resolution 970 asks Perry to ask the Minutemen to abandon plans to patrol the border here. It cites possible problems with urban borders, private land and the economy.

“Minutemen patrols could impede the traffic and negatively affect both tourism and trade along the border,” the resolution shows.

On Saturday, the resolution was left pending by the Senate Committee on Intergovernmental Relations.

Perry has said he understands the frustration of Americans upset that undocumented immigrants are entering the country, but does not approve of Minuteman tactics.

U.S. Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee, D-Houston, has also sent a letter to Perry urging him to “disinvite” the Minutemen.

Perry responded that he cannot “disinvite” people he never invited, and said any law-abiding citizens are free to travel in and out of the state.

Jackson Lee and others in Congress should address the federal problem through policies in Washington, Perry told her in a letter.

“The federal government can and must do more to close the border to illegal immigration,” Perry wrote. “Until that happens, these kinds of citizen-initiated efforts likely will be the result.

“If you want to send the Minutemen home, I urge you to make sure we have enough federal agents on the border to secure it.”
