Its a bit like the chicken and the egg. I would say that it is the Record date that gives the share registry time to sort out its paperwork. Even if they don't get your paperwork on time, assuming that you are not chess sponsored and with a broker that does it automatically you still own the dividend, its just that you won't get it until you lodge the necessaries and they get around to sending it to you. If you purchase before the ex date the dividend belongs to your holding. E1
