re: oly what is a hardstand area? "Hardstanding" was an area beside an airstrip where you park the aircraft. The "hard" bit was because if the parking lot wasn't the aircraft would woulk sink into the surface and be hard to move.
In general usage it has become any large open prepared area for putting stuff on.
