PD sounds like you are subscribing to full on free market principles and support moving Qantas operations outside Australia if that means improving its profit bottom line. From a purely business perspective that sounds plausible but I cant understand the rationale for this being the catalyst for your sudden brand loyalty unless its an ideological thing. Once operations are mainly based outside Australia you cant really call it a National Carrier and deserving of traditional brand loyalty.
IMO Australia's best interests are served when a company wanting to use the National Carrier and associated loyalty Brand employs as many Australians as possible and retains as much of its support business in Australia. Good managements imo are able to get co-operation from their workforce to improve efficiency and productivity if the aim is to retain most operations in Australia. However IF a management has decided it intends to move mainly outside of Australia, its only natural its workforce etc is going to be unhappy and try to stall such moves. If a company believes it will do better moving away from Australia it can do so but should not expect any special loyalty from Australians. Further as Qantas was a National Carrier it is subject to various statutory conditions of sale and Australia is entitled to protect the Australian interest through requiring any sale conditions be met.
The article posted by dbl21 gives an interesting insight into the whole issue.
Negotiation and compromise has got to be the best outcome for all stakeholders. Until Management and its workforce are singing the to the same tune I dont hold high hopes for improvement. They need to get to a position where they can all sing with sincerity "Qantas, the spirit of Australia, the flying kangaroo".
Just my own opinions based on my very limited knowledge and understanding of the position.
