I worked for QF in line maintenance for over 20 years.
I also left 5 years ago, nothing much has changed, except they no longer do customer aircraft, just QF now.
Basically you have a foreman who is pretty much administrative, but can certify if necessary.
Then you have a Senior Lame/leading hand who runs the shift. Then you have the LAMEs under them who rectify and certify.
Nobody flies for free, unless you are on duty travel ( ie work ) or maybe a 10 or 20 years service long service leave trip, which is in the award.Actually you may still have to pay for them also i think?
I haven't used staff travel for a while now so its getting a bit hazey.
