FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TSX, ASX: AVM June 7, 2005
Common shares outstanding: 29 million Anvil Mining Limited Response to Television Report of June 6, 2005 PERTH – Anvil Mining Limited (TSX, ASX: AVM) A 4 Corners program shown on ABC television on June 6, 2005 made or implied a number of allegations against Anvil Mining Limited.
The program focussed on the DRC Government’s military response to rebel activity in the Village of Kilwa in the Democratique Republic of Congo (DRC) in October 2004. The program alleged that Anvil was "complicit" or "implicated" in the military action, and the associated loss of life.
The program also implied that Anvil had an improper business relationship with a senior Government official, and this relationship somehow also contributed to the military response. The allegations made against Anvil are deplorable, and without foundation. As a result of the rebel activity in October 2004, Anvil evacuated its non-essential personnel from the Dikulushi mine. The DRC military requested access to Anvil's air services and vehicles, to facilitate troop movements in response to the rebel activity.
Anvil had no option but to agree to the request, made by the military of the lawful Government of DRC, as any other company would have done in similar circumstances. Anvil had no knowledge of what was planned for the military operation, and was not involved in the military operation in any way. Anvil's sole concern was to safely evacuate non-essential personnel.
The idea that Anvil somehow influenced the military action, or should be seen as complicit in the military action, is nonsense.
Anvil advises that it has also allocated 10% of the profits of the Dikulushi Mine and any subsequent mines that may be developed in the Dikulushi Mining Convention Area to a special purpose trust the funds from which are being used for social and community development programs near the mine.
The trusts were established in conjunction with signing the Mining Convention in January 1998. The company has built a seven room school at Dikulushi Village which now provides a reasonable level of education for approximately 200 children.
The Company is currently refurbishing the Kilwa Hospital, has plans to build a second school in the Village of Lumakete, located 9km North of Dikulushi and has water reticulation plans for two Villages. Anvil employs approximately 650 personnel at its Dikulushi Mine, most of whom come from Kilwa and neighbouring Villages.
