That isnt how Chinese intelligence works.

It's more likely that Chinee intelligence just talk to people who've been to conferences, ask about interesting work in their field, see who's doing cool stuff, and so on.

This report then goes up into the system.

It tends to filter and sort the mass of public data into important intelligence stuff, rather than find out 'secrets'.
