Richard joined Slater & Gordon Melbourne in August 2004. From 1991 to 2004, he was a Partner at a leading London public interest law firm, Leigh Day & Co. He was recognised as a leading lawyer in the UK in the areas of group actions and product liability, in which he handled a number of high profile cases.
Over a 10 year period Richard pioneered litigation against UK multinationals on behalf of South African workers in the cases of Lubbe v Cape PLC, Connelly v RTZ and Ngcobo v Thor Chemicals, including ground-breaking rulings from the House of Lords in 1997 and 2000 which transformed English law. The Cape PLC case led to a settlement of the claims of 7,500 South African asbestos miners.
Richard has been actively involved in issues relating to international human rights generally, including advising and assisting various NGOs and UN organisations.
Richard's achievements include:
winner of the 2002 Liberty/Justice Human Rights Lawyer of the Year Award (UK)
special Achievement Award from international asbestos groups, presented at the South African High Commission in London in 2002
around 60 published articles, in legal and medical journals and also numerous lectures worldwide on his work and the subject of corporate social accountability generally, including a lecture in Melbourne in January 2003 as Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Castan Centre for Human Rights
All 'highly commendable work but trying to nail a mining company for lending its vehicles to the army is a bit of a departure from asbestosis claims.
