Used to be S160zzq(1) of the old Inc Tax Ass Act = 6 years.
Essentially, if the property was the principal place of residence you can elect to deem it to continue so for 6 years after that, as only can elect for 1 property to be PPPR at any one time - check easily with ATO.
This exemption was put into CGT legislation and was known as the pollie's exemption.
