I was getting sick of the talk about coloured diamonds, the politics are more interesting and more important.
A few comments and some links for those who are interested.
1. Angola is the second largest sub-saharan African country behind Nigeria for oil exports. 1.8million bpd in 2010; 40% of its gdp is from oil. Most goes to the USA and China.

(the comments at the end 350+ of them, are worth a quick scan for a taste of the heat and vitriol.... a collection of comments from western apologists, sino sock-puppets, nigerian ax -grinders, south african pan-africanists.....it makes HC look tame).
2. Angola is now China's biggest African trading partner.
3. Angola scores badly in terms of governance and corruption: corruption perception index 2.0/10 and the Ibrahim index of Africa Governance rank 44th of 48. This will not be news to most of you.

4. Does the trickle down theory of wealth work in practice? The Angolan experience suggests otherwise. In Luanda few than 1 in 10 people have running water but hotels can still cost $400 a night -

5. Chinese buying has overtaken the USA for Angolan diamonds

6. Chinese interests in Diamond mining
now have an 18% stake in Catoca

8. Lets not forget landmines. Angola is the third most landmined country in the world after Cambodia and Afghanistan

So how can Lonrho a small Aussie diamond explorer with one hand tied behind its back compete with potentially more unscrupulous competitors, to develop a potentially world class resource that doesn't stiff the locals but includes them, not just the corrupt ruling class in Luanda?
