except what is low and excessive? You have to set what is low or ex. by comparing to stock historical vol which is more like what HOTGUESS says but I don't think it is exactly what he says.
And then, for historic vol you have to put in N days of stock closing price. How many should N be?(I don't know).
And as usual, I suppose really you want the historical vol that the stock will have in the next few days, not what it used to be upto yesterday.
