Personally I feel all this business about Kilwa is a good old fashion beatup. I wouldn't be suprised if 4C was made aware of the situation by S&G in an attempt to bolster there case. Is S&G concerned about the congans who are tortured and killed by the rebels and military every month in other parts of the country? No, because they can't get any money out of the DRC government or the rebels. Sadly, S&G will lose interest in these poor people as soon as they do the sums and figure out that even if they were to find the "smoking gun" and prove their ridiculous claims, the potential payout would be minimal and their cut even less. Australian asbestos workers are lucky to get $100,000. How much are 100 illiterate dirt-poor gun-toating congan rebels worth? Sad but true!
As for the suggestions that the AFP should be sent in to investigate. Why should australian taxpayers fork out for investigating events aimed at restoring order in another country over nine months ago? I'm all for the AFP helping restore order in the area, if only they were present in Oct last year.
The real facts are that AVM is raking in bucket loads of cash with more to come. From the outset they have commited 10% of profits to the local community with schools and hospitals under construction. Long term AVM holders, myself 2.5 years, knew this when the mine commenced production in 2002 and sat very well with me. This was not to regain community support following the incident as alleged in the story. The local peoples best chance at a brighter future is the ongoing success of Anvil mining.
Anvil does not deal with the general public like a woolies or coles so public opinion is irrelevant. Smelters don't care where the copper comes from.
I can only see the current drop in price a good buying oportunity. Thats why I bought another 10K.
