Incorrect. It was the other way around. They went for a mine already in production and not for one awaiting to be built from scratch. They though of becoming a middle size producer right now instead of tomorrow. One possible reason for this may have been their fear that the window of opportunity given by an exuberant appetite for gold stocks would not last long enough in the sense that mine development takes ages.
However, this is just a conjecture.
