The other thing you might be able to do, (if you have a margin lending account) is to call ANZ for example and to speak to an account manager there.

They may be able to organise transactions faxed or emailed by you during this time. Their phone was also blocked when I tried though...

If your really stuck you could try faxing an order to ETrade and ask them to confirm the order via email. At least it might be legally binding if you have a received ok receipt and they should be able to process paper orders and update the systems after.
