Harlee,
I have seen people on Methadone long term .... for years and years, with no problems.
Of course like any drug or medication, prescribed or otherwise, it is not without some potential side effects.
But is the lesser of evils in opiate addicted individuals.
It is an inexpensive to the patient, regularly and reliably available, accurate daily dose.
It is not a panacea, and those on a Methadone programme also need to have the right attitude and desire, with good support from friends and family to avoid the temptation of returning to their old habits.
I have seen people who gradually reduce their dose over time until they are totally drug free.
Sadly, many Methadone patients do also use other drugs at the same time and drop out of the programme.
