I construct my charts using a program called "pro charts egoli". You can download it for free, just do a google search.
Those greyish lines you are talking about are bollinger bands. Basically a 20day moving average of the price, set 2 standard deviations apart. I never look at a chart without them. The 20 day bollinger band is the most popular, but i like to use a 10 day as is hugs the price more, and i find it more accurate so to speak.

If your interested a great book to start with is "john bollinger on bollinger bands" just to help you understand the concept of them.
