The objective of the carbon tax is to make coal fired powerexpensive. This is so that expensive green energy has more chance of competing.
The price of electricity will rise so demand will reduce.
The problem with this idea is that it hasn't been thought through. There will be unintended consequences.
For most people electricity demand has low 'elasticity'; that is they will still run their airconditioners and pay the higher bill.
Poor people and pensioners will not be able to afford their airconditioners. It is they who will reduce their demand. Old people will die during heatwaves.
