People have no trouble understanding what has and is happening to the climate and life on the planet. As you point out, children can understand with a short explanation, it's simple enough.
It's accepting it which some find so difficult and in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence the only rational reason for that denial is fear of change, loss of lifestyle and ultimately, seeking justification to hide the shame of such an untenable position instead of supporting radical change.
