"DRIVERS who fly Australian flags on their cars to celebrate Australia Day are "more racist" than people who do not, according to research from UWA."
Yep, in general, I don't find those results surprising at all. Sad but true.
That's not to say that everyone who decides to put those things on their cars is racist, but there is a certain section of the population that do it for that sole reason.
The sight of drunken thugs draped in our national flag walking along the beach a couple of years ago cured me of Australia Day. It has become a day when the bogans think they may be able to pick a fight with some immigrants they don't like, and enjoy the support of their fellow yobbos.
I now find Australia Day one of the most distasteful days on our calendar. Would love to celebrate it on a day when it gave due recognition to the aborigines and multiculturalsim etc.
But ever since the Cronulla riots, Australia Day to me is now Ugly Day. Still love the nation, but we need a new date to allow everyone to celebrate with equal joy, and good memories and symbolism.
