Yeah, I appreciate that politically, it's a huge advantage. I can't help but feel, though, that the radioactivity issue is severely overblown from a strictly scientific point of view - and that's what I'm trying to understand: just how radioactive a given amount of thorium is, especially compared to typical background levels. I'm after quantitative information, not general "high" or "low" - what dee59 is describing as "high levels of radioactivity" could well be akin to having something as innocuous as a couple of shipping containers full of bananas. I very much doubt that we're talking "the middle of an operating fission plant" levels.
