rational has got nothing to do with it. IMO
the need to make money is simply a result of adapting to a completely irrational world, a world so irrational it assumes GDP must grow forever, or everyone will have to suffer.
obviously, we are going to need a spare planet soon then, because this one will be all used up.
it is within this completely irrational world that i cannot personally change, that for me it makes rational sense to hang on until flow rates improve, phoenix comes off, or whatever.
in a wider context however, the use of fossil fuels is completely and utterly irrational.
