the Germans population thought that too as the 1930's evolved - and monster Hitler emerged out of the depths - and look where that landed them.
It is when a nation seemingly cannot see the growing evil festering right under their noses (or refuses to acknowledge the reality because of their own agendas, or brainwashing by the evils) that serious disaster looms largest.
We are already entering just such a phase, IMO.
