I asked the (extremely difficult) question and you gave your answers, but I disagree with some of them.

Dont forget the Cold War is only just over and most of the present geopolitical alliances have their roots well in truely in that era.

4. And no matter how you want to put it, that Israel has killed a lot of civilians and there has been mayhem in the "occupied territories" is perhaps true, but no one who thinks straight or has a glimmer of humanity equates those actions with a suicide bombing campaign that clearly targets wonmen and children. And whose families then get paid by the other Arab countries - ratbags like the Saudi's and Iraqis..
Who do you really believe a Western, rational and humane society would support??

I think that the US is inherently a religious country and because of it's leanings to the bible recognise Israel as being the promised land, promised solely to the children of the book.

I think that th US acknowledges that the Jews have had the raw end of the stick for too many centuries and that morally they identify with the Jews having one country for themselves on this planet.

I believe that the US has self interest at stake that may have to do with some, all, or none of the above. I am not naiive enough to believe that the US has such strong ties simply because they want to be nice to the Jews.

I think the inate distrust that the US (and the rest of the non Muslim world) hold the Muslims in some sort of contempt as they will privately acknowledge that they wouldn't trust them as far as they could throw them.
Sept 11 re-enforced all of that. I believe that most Americans deep down believe that Jews inherently believe in "live and let live" unless forced into a corner and that the Arab world does not.
