do larger mining companies ever get involved with smaller ones if they see no security or potential benefit?

Further, would AVB be interested in the deal if it was considerably unfair?

I see it like this, (not that i know)
xstrata would not bother getting involved in a company were there no future benefits (from production, to take-over position, and so on). That said there is probably slightly more risk on AVB's side of the coin, as they are the junior trying to 'make friends' with the major. However if AVB have good findings in the new tenements, as well as their current ones, the door is wide open for Xstrata backing and further interest.

Just because the market hasn't reacted isn't to say this news isn't positive. Positive news means nothing for AVB currently, as proven by almost every ANN in the past 12 months.

Where i've invested in junior explorers seeking to develop mines in regions were no majors were present, i've had big losses. As such it is comforting to have relations with both xstrata and vale.

    buwahahaha.

its all just building for AVB..
