If he doesn't have the numbers to win the leadership back, I think the suggestion that he might go independent is an interesting idea. That way, he retains his seat and forces Gillard to do his bidding if she wants to stay in power.
Still, Rudd has surprised us with this move, he may still have a few other surprises in store.
