East Africa gas play boosted by Statoil & Exxon’s 5 TCF discovery offshore Tanzania

The East African gas play was again boosted today as Statoil and ExxonMobil confirmed that their new discovery offshore Tanzania is believed to contain 5 trillion cubic feet of gas-in-place.
This discovery was made in the first exploration well in offshore Block 2.
The partners say the well encountered 120 metres of excellent quality reservoir, with high porosity and high permeability. Furthermore the gas-water contact point has not been established and drilling operations continues, Statoil added.
Today’s announcement comes at the end of a significant week for the East Africa gas story.
On Wednesday Shell proposed a £1 billion bid to buy AIM quoted Cove Energy, which has an 8.5 per cent stake in an Anadarko led venture in the deep-water off Mozambique.
There the partners have made a series of large gas discoveries. And on Tuesday, Anadarko revealed that the Lagosta-3 appraisal well had extended the western area of the gas field after it found 577 net feet of natural gas pay.
The field is currently estimated to contain between 15 and 30 trillion cubic feet of gas. The partners plan to develop the field as a liquefied natural gas project (LNG).
