The CORRECT spelling of ColOmbia is NOT ColUmbia
Learn why so many people misspell Colombia
Learn Why is Colombia Misspelled 70% of the Time?
You might wonder what compels many to write so emphatically the name of our country. Well, no less than seventy five percent of the letters, faxes and e-mails that we receive, are usually addressed to the Embassy of "ColUmbia".
The confusion comes from the difference in spelling in English and Spanish of the name of the discoverer of America, Italian Cristoforo Colombo (Christopher Columbus), the person after whom our country is named. In Spanish we spell his name "Cristobal Colón", and it is only natural for us to spell our country's name "Colombia". For English speakers, and in particular for U.S. residents, it is only natural to spell our name with a "U", after all, that is the spelling of the city in South Carolina, the Nation's Capital, the prestigious University in New York, and many cities in the States of Maryland, Indiana, Oregon and Florida among others. However, please do not forget that our official name is "The Republic of Colombia"

Compared with most mining countries/regions Colombia rates consistently high on the ranking tables. Botswana is the standout African jurisdiction.
Latin America’s average score continues to decrease, this year dropping from 34.3 to 29.6 [lower score is better]. This is a far cry from the 2005/06 survey, where the average score for that continent was 51.2. Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras, and Bolivia pull the average down. There were also disappointments in Latin America for its top scorer, Chile, now at 18th, down from 8th last year, and its most improved jurisdiction, Colombia. In 2006/2007, Colombia scored 24.6 but climbed to 51.2 in last year’s survey. This year it scored 38.0, suggesting continued uncertainty in the mining community about policy and policy stability in Colombia.
