Many decades ago I knew a water side worker who was selling stolen yacht winches from shipments.

Labor seem to be instant gratification people,like a drug user.They don't think what will happen down the track. I want it now,pay later if I have too, Bankruptcy is one way out of paying.Or as in your case, priced themselves out of their Job.
What is hard to get out of, is hard to get into,permanent jobs, is one of those things,
I heard casual employment is on the increase big time,an people can't get a loan to buy a house unless they have a permanent Job.
There will always be a price to pay,if not now,then later.
