Mining meetings
KATRINA KOCH
01 Mar, 2012 10:01 AM
Over 100 community members and business owners attended the Kimba public meeting last Wednesday, which was held at the Kimba Sporting complex.
IronClad Operations Manager Ian McRae addressed the group outlining the next steps to getting the Iron Ore mine at Wilcherry up and running and the proposed timeline for projects to be in place.
Approval for The Lucky Bay end of operations was expected by the second week in March and then calls for tenders will be advertised for the building of the dock. It was envisaged the dock would be built by July.
All approvals for mining at Wilcherry have been received and works are expected to begin early March. A land rehabilitation bond was payable to the Government by February 28th 2012.
“We will be drilling another 40-50 more holes. We just want to confirm what we already know is out there and where to start”, said Mr McRae.
The Wilcherry project when running effectively will move 1-3 thousand tonnes per day from Kimba to Lucky Bay, equating to around a million tonnes per year. The mine is expected to have a life of 5 years and will be then followed by a much bigger site named the Hercules project, which has the potential to move 5-15million tonnes per year. More feasibility studies are needed for this site and will begin 12-18months down the track.
Trucking the iron ore from Kimba to Lucky Bay will not begin in the short term, as the company is hoping to build up a stock pile of consistent high grade iron ore first. The iron Ore will be trucked in steel containers from the mine to a barge, then pulled or pushed to a docking site where it will be loaded onto ships.
Also addressing the community at the public meetings were the companies that are contracted to make the day to day running of the mine possible, POAGS, Lucas Earthmovers, Australian Camp services (ACS) and TAFE SA. These companies are offering employment opportunities and training for surrounding community members.
Lucas Earthmovers will be responsible for all earthworks and will be looking for plant operators, surveyors, supervisors and admin staff. Shifts are 7 day shifts then 7 night shifts then 7 off. POAGS will be responsible for transport of the ore in containers to Lucky Bay and then to the ships in the Gulf and will require licensed drivers and forklift operators, supply of diesel and maintenance of trucks.
Australian Camp services (ACS) have already built the 5million dollar accommodation village on the edge of Kimba by the recreation reserve. To keep this facility functional they will be looking to hire Chefs, cooks, kitchen hands, house-keepers etc.
At the Mine itself IronClad will be looking for a business to supply water to the site, waste removal, vehicle maintenance, general hardware, health and safety officers and more. The mine will run 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. 14 days on 7 days off. 12 hour shifts (from Kimba and back again)
Tafe SA will be offering varied training courses for mining industry.
