EMIRATES Airline, the world's largest operator of Airbus A380s, says it plans to seek compensation from the aircraft maker related to widespread disruption following the discovery of wing cracks on the super-jumbo jets.
Emirates president Tim Clark told the Financial Times in an interview published Friday that the airline expected to lose up to $90 million of revenue by the end of March because of the A380 groundings that began in January.
He added that the airline would seek compensation for the incident, but declined to specify the amount under review.
The Dubai-based carrier has been forced to temporarily ground all 21 of its A380s, six at a time, while the wing cracks are fixed, according to the FT.
European aviation safety regulators early last month issued a notice requiring all airlines operating the A380 to get their aircraft checked for possible cracks in brackets inside the planes' wings.
Clark reiterated Airbus' insistence that the A380 is perfectly safe to fly, but added, "From a commercial point of view, it's a dreadful experience. It has caused a lot of commercial hardship and we are not very happy with the way this has gone."
He slammed Airbus' initial handling of the issue, accusing the company of being in a state of "denial," although he accepted the company was now taking action to remedy the situation.
Emirates discovered wing cracks on 10 of its Airbus super-jumbos that have been inspected so far, the FT said. Clark expects the entire fleet to need some repair work.
Shares in Airbus parent company, EADS, ticked down 1.4 percent in early Paris trade.
