I absolutely concur with your sentiment, but I have to pull you up on the custom of bread and salt.
As a Red Sea Pedestrian myself, I can tell you that's not correct.
Bread and salt is the traditional housewarming gift for a new home. (Doesn't seem very generous by todays standards, but go back 5,000 years and you get the picture).
