"I have been watching Escape to the Country as well, and it's amazing how much more your money buys in the English conutryside."

    amazing...statement..
have you converted the UK dollar to the aus dollar, in your statement ?
the UK dollar is about double Aus dollar...so the $450 K in the UK is about $900k Aus

for your information, my heritage is English, through and through...my family immigrated to Aus, in the 1700's, they lived in Melb, and Kyneton, Riddles Creek, Bendigo,Sydney and throughout Australia...
They were gentry, they were not ciminals, they held the highest offices in the land

they reproduced English heritage wherever they went,
you can find little pockets of England, replicas all over Aus, if you look...
Toorak is a prime example,(in its original state) and there are other suburbs, pockets all over OZ....
grand mansions, rolling fields, 100's of acres, rather than
the 1 or 3 acres, with the stables, converted to a house...as in this series....
The original estates, the mansions, are still held by the original owners, or by the beneficiaries.....but parts are sold off, as in the stables and an acre of land...on a regular basis....
