Iron ore billionaire Clive Palmer has failed his attempt to scupper Central Petroleum's $11 million share placement.

Central Petroleum last night said that Petroleum Nominees, a Palmer company which owns just under 5 per cent, had failed in the Supreme Court to be granted an interlocutory injunction.

It is thought Mr Palmer objected to the placement, under which Patersons Securities clients received stock at 8.5¢ a share, because he was not invited to participate. Mr Palmer is understood to have eyed the entire $11 million placement, to increase his Central Petroleum stake to almost 13 per cent. Central Petroleum shares last traded at 10¢.

Central Petroleum's operational focus is in central Australia where it is in the throes of developing the Surprise oil field. It also has a coal exploration project.

Central Petroleum did not name Mr Palmer although it is known he is behind Petroleum Nominees.

Mr Palmer's interference in the company is the latest controversy surrounding Central Petroleum.

Central Petroleum said yesterday it would ask shareholders to sack founder John Heugh at an upcoming meeting. The company terminated Mr Heugh's executive role last month although he remains a non-executive director.
Dissident investors including Mr Heugh have requisitioned their own meeting to vote on motions for the incumbent board to be sacked. But their bid is being frustrated by Central Petroleum's insistence the requisition notice was invalid.
