starting on a good note
This was the third down year in a row for the Dow which from a historical perspective is a rare event and has only happened twice before (1929-1932 and 1939-1941) since 1896 as shown by the chart below. As I pointed out last weekend each time the Dow has been down 3 or more years in a row it has been followed by a multiple year rally (1933-1936 and 1942-1945). Thus the probability of the market eventually turning around sometime in 2003 or 2004 are rather high from a historical standpoint.
