I'm no scientist but this explanation of climate change made sense to me. Global warming, or climate change as it now seems to be called, warms up the worlds oceans which in turn affects the jet streams The jet streams oscillate north and south as they circumnavigate the northern and southern areas of the globe. The warming oceans affect the air temperatures which in turn affects the jet stream oscillations making the oscillations bigger which ( in the case of the northern oscillation) is bringing (pushing) cold air from the arctic further south then normal and warm air from the tropics further north. This explains the much colder winter spells as well as the much hotter summers spells being experienced around the world.
I've also heard that the antarctic ice is disappearing on one side of the continent but building up on the other. The jet stream oscillations being out of wack probably explains that also!
