it does not need to be synchronized with motor position. Induction motors Synchronize to the input frequency not the other away around and this is how they have worked for 75 + years. IF you just read how any of the Tesla cars work other than model 3 you would understand the very poor logic in your statement.

Your statement "voltages involved in any tech switching electromagnets on/off quickly will be very high and therefore both dangerous and unavailable from batteries. " The first half is correct. But this is why many controllers work with battery voltage over 500 volts and some are going to 4000 Volts. Also the wave form is not sinusoidal which allows for much more torque than sinusoidal wave-forms. The controllers have almost instantaneous changes in voltage. Current change is slower but still pretty fast.
