From the Lynas Corp website: Mt Weld, with its very high grade contains light Rare Earths and is also high in Europium, a heavy Rare Earth.
LYC's motive for taking a stake in NTU had nothing to do with capital gain, it was bought because they saw Chinese ownership of NTU as a potential threat to their business at a later date.
Due diligence prior to purchasing this share should provide all the information you need with regards to the thwarted Chinese bid.
