Ultimately Israel is armed by the USA to defeat Iran in a major confrontation.. the idea being that the level of armament serves as a deterrent to that scenario ever occurring.. largely, this has succeeded .. the status quo stands
There is nothing wrong with Israel and the USA sharing this mutal 'deterrent' strategy
The problem is that an extremist organisation such as Likud, are in charge of this capability and are using it against a ghetto
If Likud and the Israeli legal system prosecuted the abhorrent crimes of Oct 7 as a criminal event, rather than a 'war' event, this whole shabby epsiode would be playing out very differently.
There is a nobility in restraint, especially when holding a big stick. There is also a responsibility to act within the framework of behaviour to which we all aspire, which would see a gradual prosectution of the response or remedy, rather than an emotional outburst, attack or popular retribution.
Israel could have stayed calm, stayed logical and gone about the identification of culprits and the 'legal' issuing of warrants for their arrest, including Hamas leadership..
While at the same time, deploying the 'deterrent' to further attacks, the IDF, into more aggressive 'active' forward positions without incursion with the sole intention of protecting the Israeli public.. Something they failed to do on Oct 7
Now we have a ghetto in ruins, 23000 palestinians dead, countless injured and/or homeless and at least 500 IDF dead not to mention the hostages still missing
Is this a satisfactory price so far, for the 'elimination of Hamas' ? and furthermore, what are the future implications for the safety of Israeli citizens and/or westerners on an ongoing basis as a result of these actions ?
