They stopped digging for Cryolite because they practically ran out of Cryolite at the only mine that had Cryolite in commercial quantity in the whole World. Due to the known decline in Cryolite reserves those pesky scientists came up with synthetic products that made Cryolite in smelting and alas mining and shipping the stuff out of the Arctic no longer required.
