Even if they drilled through nuggets (low likelihood even if they exist) the chances of seeing visible gold in cores is pretty low. Therefore if they didn't tell the lab to assay for hold then there possible could be gold in the cores without knowing it. Just like the inverse situation for the company you speak of. However pegmatites and the conglomerates that the gold rush are based around aren't the same geological setting so it seems unlikely that they will have gold.
