Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says the Albanese government is damaging Australia's reputation "on a daily basis", calling on the Prime Minister to "deliver on his promises".

"The government needs to clear up the absolute disarray they've caused," Mr Canavan told Sky News on Tuesday morning.

"They've been airing and flying more kites than you'd see at a windy beach on a summer's day. They just got so many different policies out there."

Calling a move by the federal government to introduce coal price caps "ironic", Mr Canavan questioned why Anthony Albanese had suddenly become protective of a resource his government was attempting to phase out.

"Isn't it just so ironic that you've got the same people who wanted to end fossil fuel, so that we don't need coal anymore, and now they want to pass laws to force people to sell them coal at a discount," he said.

"It seems to me there's just one Christmas gift Anthony Albanese wants under his tree this year, and that's a lump of coal."

The Nationals Senator reported "a huge amount of concern" in the energy and resource sector, calling out the federal government for putting the country's reputation at "enormous" risk.

"Price caps always end in tears, because they lead to shortages and if you get a shortage in the electricity market, you get a blackout," he said.

Labelling the Prime Minister's and Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek's dismissal of nuclear energy a "knee jerk reaction", the Nationals Senator accused the leaders of having a "closed mind when it comes to energy".

"I'm not against wind and solar energy… We just need to have lots of different types of energy to suit different types of environments," he said.

"Australian families voted for Anthony Albanese, as I said, thinking that they would get $275 off their electricity price a year."
